Roommate Horror Stories

My freshman year at Auburn was an interesting one. It was my first experience with roommates. Until that time, I had my own room and didn’t have to share a bathroom or anything. It was quite nice. Then, all of the sudden in September of 1994, I went from no roommates to three (and sometimes four).

For those of you familiar with Auburn, I was living in the CDV Extension. For those of you not, here’s a brief “tour”. The CDV Extension is more like an apartment complex than a dorm. There are no interior corridors and each unit is it’s own compact little “apartment” consisting of two bedrooms (each with it’s own lock), a large bathroom, and a common room, which consisted of a dining table, and kitchen against one wall.

Anyway, I had to learn to live with some new, exciting people…. let’s meet them, shall we?

Wayne - he shared my room with me. An engineering major from South Georgia. Nice guy, seemed more like me, personality wise, than the other two. After two quarters, Wayne got on a co-op program, which basically gave me the room to myself! During the two quarters I did spend there with Wayne, he was a good guy…. always helpful and polite.

Adam - he was in other room. An undecided major on a full-ride scholarship. Didn’t really want to go to college. Rarely went to class starting the second quarter. Found God and wanted to do something with religion instead of going to class. Adam hailed from Leeds, Alabama. Once Adam found religion, he spent a lot of time in his room… drinking and playing Guitar. I’m not quite sure how that equalled his religious beliefs, but anyway…. Adam would “go home” for weekends…. which usually consisted of leaving on Thursday and coming back… oh, on Tuesday. Then one “weekend”, Adam just disappeared off the face of the planet. He never came back. In fact, he parents had to come up and remove his stuff from the room when we were moving out.

James - Adam’s roommate. A business major and sterotypical “frat guy”, came from Atlanta. After he was officially a pledge in his fraternity, he seemed to stay out later and later each night. Mr. Thrill a minute. I can remember plenty of times waking up at 2 or 3 am to the door slamming against the wall and hearing “Oh shit” or some other four-letter epitath…. unfailingly drunk. We’d listen to him cuss his way to the bathroom and then off to bed…. where he’d usually wind up in some state of undress, and always on top of the sheets. I remember one occasion where James almost started a fire in the kitchen while trying to cook chili….. things got better Winter quarter when James started spending more time at Allison’s place (see below) or spending time at the frat house. Either way, we didn’t care… he wasn’t in the unit with us.

Allison - James’ girlfriend. While she wasn’t an official roommate (according to Auburn), she did spend a lot of nights in our apartment. While Wayne and I were only subjected to the noise, poor Adam…. either had to pretend he was sleeping, or leave the room.

Anyway, those were my freshman roommates. I guess as roommates go, I got kinda lucky…. I’ve seen worse… much much worse.

It’s 10 years later, I wonder who’s living in B101 now….
