In this world of buying everything bigger, better, and bad-asser (is that a word?) on credit… there’s a certain unique good feeling about making the final payment on your car. You know that feeling you get when you buy a new car? You go out and wash it once or twice a week, you keep it looking neat, clean and perfect at all times? You know how after a year or two, that wears off? Yeah, it did for me too…
Now the floor of my car is covered in crumbs, usually from eating breakfast in it on my way to work (I seem to remember something about a “no eating rule” when I bought the car), a couple of soda stains on the carpet from where a can of Dr. Pepper once exploded in my car (what a mess THAT was!) and I don’t think I’ve washed my car in over six months. It’s not a complete wrecck inside…. it just looks that way.
Well, that attitude changed yesterday…. I was looking at my car through different eyes or something…. I guess now that it has sunk in that I am the one true owner of my car and that the bank owns no piece of it…. I want to take care of it again. So, I think today during lunch, I’m going to take it down to the car-wash and get the Best Wash or whatever they call it and get it cleaned inside and out…. wash, vacuum, dust, clean the engine, whatever they’re willing to do short of waxing it (that’s too expensive, I’ll wax my own car, thankyouverymuch)….
Interesting how one little payment can give you a totally different outlook on your possessions. It gives you a certain freedom…. knowing I won’t ever pay $318.18 a month for that car ever again. I know now that I can apply that money to yet another of the onslaught of bills in my life. But that will make for another blog later.
