Scenes from an Auburn Game…

Today was the home opener for my Auburn Tigers…. we won 31 to nothing. Always feels good to shutout the visitors in the opening game of the season.

But I’m not writing this blog entry to talk about the game…. It’s more of a commentary on the social habits of people…. for example….

I want to know when it became acceptable to not take your hat off for the National Anthem? Millions call themselves patriots and say they’re proud to be an American, yet you can’t take your hat off when your country’s song is being played? Another thing that is becoming more common is people laughing, chatting, and fooling around while the Star Spangled Banner is being played. I remember the good old days where everyone STOOD UP, SHUT UP, and took their hat off. For God’s sake, men (and women)… show some American spirit… where’s your loyalty to this country? Stop calling yourselves patriots if you can’t manage to do those three simple things.

I realize it’s been 10 years since I was a freshman at Auburn, but when did students start leaving in the first and second quarter of the football game? I mean, Auburn wasn’t even that far ahead yet and by the end of the second quarter, I saw students streaming towards the exits… What is so important that you have to leave so early in the game for? It’s not like it’s cutting into party or date time. It’s not even 3 pm! Heck, if it’s so important to leave early, don’t bother coming in the first place…. it’d make getting in a little faster for the rest of us.

And another thing…. when did the Greek organizations start requiring people to show up in the heaviest of clothing during the hottest days of the year? I’m seeing guys out there in suits and girls out there in dresses I’ve seen worn to fancy restaurants and theater engagements… and they’re wearing this stuff to a football game?!? Do have some kind of sadists on the executive boards of the frats and sororities these days? It’s nearly 90 freakin’ degrees outside, not to mention the humidity…. ugh.

Something else that disturbs me, on a more personal level…. I believe I’ve been travelling so much that I’m losing touch with the south. I was listening to some people talk at Tiger Walk, and well, I couldn’t understand them…. their southern accents were too much. I think I’m so used to hearing people talk normally, that I can’t understand southern accents anymore. This could be a problem… especially in Georgia.

There were a couple of rednecks standing next to me at the game, who, were speaking English… with a little southern twist. But what was scary was they were calling each other “Daddy”…. Now, why would two grown men call each other Daddy? It all seemed kinda twisted and sick if you asked me…. One would speculate that quite possibly, it was some kind of bedroom thing…. but, they kept pointing out to each other the hot college girls walking by…. I would be watching the game and all of the sudden I’d hear “Daddy…. daddy! Look at that one…. pink skirt”…. I’d tear my eyes away from the game and start looking around for a girl in a pink skirt….. usually I’d find them… and yes, for a redneck that calls his friend “Daddy”, he had an exceptional taste in women. There were a lot of really incredible looking women there….. man, I miss college.

I’m going to have to explore this whole social thing some more at the next game…. I’ll try to remember to take pictures. Yes, guys… I’ll take pictures of the hot chicks too. :)
