TV Blues…

After 12 seasons and multiple tragedies for its main character, NYPD Blue is going off the air. This is the last season, the last 20 episodes. As it’s one of my favorite shows, I can’t imagine it finally going off the air. What will become of Andy Sipowicz? Hopefully, this final season will answer all of our questions. The commercials and previews show great promise, bringing back a style of NYPD Blue I haven’t seen in a few seasons.

A lot of people say the show died with Bobby (Jimmy Smits), however I don’t feel that’s the case. I think that John Clark Junior (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) is an excellent eventual replacement. The current trend of him staying out all night, drinking and carousing with women brings Andy back full circle to his own demons from the first season.

I could go on and on, but as I’m sure most of you are not NYPD Blue fans, I won’t. It’s such a shame that good TV such as NYPD Blue, ER, Friends, Seinfeld, etc are being shoved out of the lineup in exchange for Who Wants to Marry My Extreme
Madeover Chihuahua and other mindless “reality” shows. I miss the days of a good drama, created by professional writers, not camerapeople.

How much worse can it get? We’ve got wife swapping, people eating gross stuff in the name of “fear”, forced wedding shows that never work (Have any of them resulted in a marriage?). It’s just mindless TV. I enjoy something that makes me laugh, makes me cry, makes me do SOMETHING besides sit there on my ass watching the “boob tube”.

Think about this fall’s lineup… can you name ten TV shows in prime time on the major networks that are not reality based? Can you name five? Funny thing is, “Reality TV” isn’t even real. It’s contrived and over-produced into something glossy and slick, highlighting peoples shortcomings and failures.

What is the public’s fascination with reality TV? My guess is it’s more like watching a train wreck. You don’t want to watch, but you feel compelled to.
