Country Roads…. Take Me Home….

Okay, now I know everyone had visions of me holed up in some South Georgia prison ala Dukes of Hazzard style or worse, but I alive and well… I’ll just have to share with you my misadventures down in Baxley, Georgia. YEEEE-HAW!

After spending two nights in near the railroad tracks in gawdawful Eastman, we had some excitement the day after my last blog post from South Georgia. As I was leaving the customers site after they closed, I saw one of Eastman’s finest flying down the highway towards my hotel… I thought “cool”, excitement at the hotel. I hopped in my truck and went in the direction the cop did! About 3/4 of a mile down the road, I see what had to have been all of the Eastman Police Department at the gas station near the hotel. I saw all three cop cars and cops moving around, guns drawn. Pretty cool… we don’t get this brand of excitement back home! Found out the next morning that someone had broken into the Eastman BP Gas Station/Bait Shop, CB Repair, and Gun Shop. They must be pretty serious about their fishing bait down there in Eastman.

I drove for what seemed like forever to head to my next small Georgia town, Baxley. Again a hotel website lied to me. I was promised High Speed Internet Access at my hotel. I even passed signs (wish I had taken a picture) that said “Welcome to Georgia’s High Tech Corridor!” I could barely contain my laughter and keep my truck on the road. I’m sorry, but if anyone along highway 341 in Georgia really feels like they’re in “High Tech Corridor”, they really need to move into the 90’s. No one down there had high speed internet access, hell one girl didn’t even know what DSL was!

Baxley almost seemed like it was an improvement over Eastman. At least they had more stoplights… but the water tasted terrible… more like water from Savannah (probably because of it’s proximity to Savannah)… which water in that area just has this odd taste to it… kind of like… oh, I don’t know, sewer water. Yum.

Problem with Baxley was that our installation crew was running behind… so I couldn’t even begin training until the installation crew was at least 40% done with the installation. So, I helped out…. then I did my training. When I was finally done with training, the install crew still wasn’t done, so being the nice guy that I am, I did some more helping out. I wound up putting in a 16 hour day on Thursday… got back to the hotel at 1:00 am, only to get back up at 7:00 am to head back to Eastman to go squash a bug before they opened. Ugh.

After spending a couple more hours in my other favorite small town, I finally got the okay to come home. So, back in the truck for another glorious four hours behind the wheel. I finally made it… only to get volunteered for another job that was supposed to take a “few” hours. I should remember to stay clear of those “few” hour jobs… It started at 6 pm and run until 6 am. By the time I got home, it was 7 am Saturday morning… I had been awake for 24 hours straight, after only getting 5 hours sleep the night before. Needless to say, I slept quite well (and all day) yesterday.

Today I spent getting Christmas together…. lord knows when I’ll have the opportunity to do it again. Ho. Ho. Ho.
