In case of fire, please remove cell phone.
At about 10 after seven this morning, I wake up to this irritating bleating… in my usual semi-awake state that early in the morning, I reach over to the nightstand and pick up the phone…. I hear a dial tone…. I hang up the phone and push all the buttons on the top of the alarm clock… that doesn’t shut up the annoying blast of sound… so then I beat on the alarm clock, knock it on it’s side, push more buttons and then knock it on the floor….
F*ckin’ thing still doesnt’ shut up… so I yank the power cord…. and I still hear this loud obnoxious ringing…. then I hear footsteps outside…. people moving in a hurry… then I wake completely up and realize…. It’s a FIRE! The poor alarm clock just took a beating because the fire alarm was going off…
Quickly I get dressed and grab my wallet…. all while my mind is going over everything I’ve ever read about getting out of a hotel during a fire… I remembered to grab my room key… then once I got my shoes on, I reached for the doorknob… suddenly I remembered “check the door first”. I touch the door, note that it’s not hot…
Then the next thought through my mind was “my laptop!”… then I thought, “Screw the laptop, it’s the company’s”, so then I thought, “My Cellphone!”. So, I grab my cellphone and out the door I went.
Remembering that I can’t take the elevator downstairs, I run into another guest so also apparently remembered that same thing at the same time, we both took off down different hallways… after a few steps, I realized there were no stairs down my hallway… so I turn back… the other guest is gone…. I wander around for a second trying to figure out where the freakin’ stairs are…. then, I found them… I make it down the stairs and follow another guest out to the lobby, where everyone’s standing… I’m thinking “Shouldn’t we go outside?”
That’s when I noticed the hotel employees are trying to find the source of the “fire” and the realization quickly sinks in that this is probably a false alarm… The cops come, the ambulance comes, and by the time the whole place had a chance to burn down, the fire truck comes…
After standing the lobby in a daze for what seemed like an eternity, we were allowed to go back to our rooms… amazing what some people thought to bring with them…. I think the guest in the room next to me brought her entire suitcase down with her. I think it’s interesting what you’ll abandon when you think the place is burning down. I left everything except my wallet and cell phone. Hell, I even left the rental car keys in my room.
Okay, enough excitement for one day… God, please just get me home.
