Super Extravaganza
One thing I love about the Superbowl every year is the advertisements…. Tomorrow, I’m looking forward to a bunch of new ads by the likes of Budweiser, Pepsi, and FedEx…. meanwhile, let’s take a trip down memory lane and review some ads from last year…
Chevrolet - An American Revolution - This ad features several shots of kids sitting around with soap in their mouths… the commerical then cuts to a shot of the new SSR putting its top down… followed by a surprise ending.
This ad started the 2004-2005 Chevrolet American Revolution Campaign that has featured many redesigns and new product line introductions as well as a renewed interest in the Chevy product. Proving once again that Chevrolet is truly an American icon, General Motors has revived a slowly dying product line.
Staples - Randy the Supply Supervisor - This commercial starts with the familiar sounds that accompany Italian godfatheresque scenes and Randy, the Supply Supervisor sitting behind his desk as his colleagues bring him their pastry offerings in exchange for office supplies. Finally fed up with Randy’s ways, one man goes to Staples and the “heavy” for a real surprise for Randy!
Staples, trying to fight for market share in the increasingly intense battle over your office supplies, used this ad as a “wake-up call” to America…. saying “Hi! Here we are!”. Whether or not America is responding has still yet to be seen…. Staples is still in business, but it sure seems that OfficeMax is giving them a run for their money in this part of the country.
Reebok - Terry Tate “Office Linebacker” - This ad starts with the very professional looking “president” of the company Felcher and Sons discussing why they asked Reebok to lend them Terry Tate. The commerical cuts to several different shots of Tate tackling and yelling at Felcher employees.
Unfortunately, while this ad has its humor, it failed to create a “buzz” beyond the Superbowl. Most people can’t even remember that it’s a Reebok ad.
Anheuser-Busch - Bud Light - “Frank the Talking Monkey” - Budweiser, the perennial king of Super Bowl ads has up to 8 to ten different commericals each year during the Super Bowl. This was one of last years, featuring a “talking monkey” that hits on his masters girlfriend.
Since 1996, Anheuser-Busch has becoming more lighthearted with its commercials with such ads as the football playing Clydesdales; the Donkey who wants to become a Clydesdale; the “Wasssup” guys; and many, many more…. In fact, this year Anheuser-Busch already has an ad banned from the Super Bowl.
Of course one Super Bowl ad always stands out in my mind… I think it’s one of the most memorable and effective ads ever, certainly six years later, I still remember the ad, I still remember the advertiser… And when talking about it with others, they still remember too. That is the sign of a highly effective ad.
1999 - Monster.com - “When I Grow Up”
Come back tomorrow after the game for my take on the Super Bowl XXXIX ads.

The most memorable superbowl commercial for me was the apple one quite a few years back. Just cool as hell.
