The Powered Toothbrush

In this day and age of automated everything and power tools, I’ve noticed they finally introduced the relatively inexpensive power toothbrush. Does anyone use a power toothbrush? You know the ones that you flip a switch and the brushes start moving and rotating?

I bought one the other day for $3.99, plus tax, at my local KMart. It’s nothing special, a green and white handled brush with a AA battery inside, and on the brush end, two little brushes, one round and one oblong. When you power it on, the round one spins and the oblong brush doesn’t move. I think this is by design. So, after seeing what my new power toy can do, I decided to use it the next day.

At this point, I should mention, I’ve been brushing my teeth the same way for many years: manually. Up to this point I have always used a large head, medium strength bristled toothbrush. I noted that the head of my new power toothbrush is about 1/3 the size of my normal toothbrush and the bristles were very soft. But, I didn’t see anything different at KMart…

After carefully putting on some toothpaste and sticking the brush in my mouth, I flipped the power switch… instantly the little round brush starts moving around in circles and toothpaste winds up all over my chin, the mirror, and the sink. Wonderful.

So, I try it again. This time, doubling the amount of toothpaste, but only putting it on the oblong part. This works fine, and the brush spins around and moves my toothpaste around. But is it doing a good job? My mind says no, so I’m tempted to brush with it like I always have with a manual brush. This again tends to get more toothpaste on my chin than in my mouth and on my teeth.

I tried using my power brush a couple more times over the past couple of days… but I’ve since decided I don’t like it. Maybe not everything should be powered. Toothbrushes especially. So, last night after work, I bought a new large head, medium strength bristled toothbrush from Wal-Mart and I’ve been happy ever since.

The trick to it is bro, that you do not put on a whole bunch of toothpaste. Once in your mouth, start with the back of your mouth first, then work your way to the front, that way you don’t get it everywhere. Now I do usually have some toothpaste that comes out of my mouth, but from the inside, not from turning it on.
