Is anyone else pissed at the NCAA for their recent ruling restricting the use of “Native American” nicknames and references? It is just disgusting that an organization that has no direct contact with fans or protesters sees fit to make a ruling affecting the history of a couple dozen colleges and universities.
Political correctness has gone too far and thank some schools have the gonads to stand up to the NCAA. Florida State has said they will oppose any action by the NCAA to restrict their use of the Seminoles as a nickname. Generally, Florida State has a good relationship with the real life Seminoles tribe. But aside from that, Florida State has been the “Seminoles” for years… you can’t just wipe out decades of history just because a few people think it might be offensive? How many white people have been offended by the University of Northern Colorado’s Fighting Whities? Not me, hell, I think it’s funny. What was supposed to be a slam on white people using Indian references in sports team turned out to be a hit amongst the very people they were intending to hurt.
“As the Fighting Whities prove, racism is not a matter of black and white,” said George Getz, the Libertarian Party’s press secretary. “After all, what … bureaucrat could ever have guessed that white people would love the Fighting Whities? That’s why [they] should not be in the business of deciding what sports team names are offensive. Racism is such a subtle and unmeasurable thing that one-size-fits-all mandates just don’t work.”
“The fact is, people’s opinions about what constitutes racism are as divergent as the color of their skin, the content of their character, and their view of the world,” he said. “That’s why [they] should not impose a monochromatic view on a wonderful, unpredictable rainbow of opinion.”

As it stands right now, the NCAA will attempt to force schools using a “hostile or abusive” Native American to cover up their slogans, mascots, and images during championships. In the future, these schools won’t be awarded future championships.
I think that’s grossly unfair. It should be up to the school, and the local community to determine if their nickname is hurtful.
Excuse me now, while I go buy me a Fighting Whities T-Shirt….
