It’s been four years since the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon and life is beginning to return to “normal”. The problem is, it shouldn’t. We live in a September 11th world, and too many of us are returning to a September 10th way of life.
Look around, how many American flags do you see on cars these days? How many did you see in the days immediately following September 11th? I still have my American Flag sticker on my car and will proudly leave it there because I don’t want to forget… and I want you to remember.
I want you to remember the 2996 people who lost their lives that day. I want you to remember the 343 firefighters who gave their lives trying to save the others in those towers. I want you to remember the 75 men and women of the Port Authority who also gave their lives. I want you to remember the raw emotions you felt when you saw Flight 175 crash into the South Tower. I want you to remember the tear in your eye when the towers collapsed. You need to remember. I need to remember. We need to remember.
We are Americans; the land of the free and the home of the brave. We saw our nations bravest go into that tower on that fateful day and some of them never returned. They never returned to their familes, their friends, their hopes, their dreams. We need to remember them.
Thousands kissed their wives and their husbands that morning, went off to their jobs on a beautiful fall morning and never returned. We need to remember them.
This country was built on bravery and courage. The Revolutionary War, The Civil War, World Wars I and II - all examples of bravery and courage. In just over 200 years, this country has gone from being a colony of another country to the worlds biggest superpower. We are the protector of freedom. Our troops are the current examples the brave and courageous, and for that, I salute them. American soldiers shouldn’t be the only heroes though. We all need to be brave and courageous. We all need stand up and fight for what we hold most dear: our freedom.
However, it seems that America is returning to a September 10th mentality. We are becoming complacent again, sweating the petty stuff. We need to not let that happen. There are 2996 men, women, and children counting on us to remember what happens when we do.
