I’ve been noticing something different as I go through the mountains of newspaper ads and wander the aisles in stores this Christmas season. Nobody uses the word Christmas anymore. It’s always “Happy Holidays” or some variation to include all of the other holidays that have popped up over the years (ie: ::wikipedia(“Kwanzaa”)::, and ::wikipedia(“Festivus”)::, as well as other traditional holidays such as Hanukkah.

Why do retailers do this? Consensus agrees that it’s in order not to offend anyone. Well, if it does FUCK ‘EM. Over 80% of American population celebrates Christmas in one fashion or another. Would you really risk offending 80% of your customer base to not offend the other 20%? In what mathematical format does that make sense? Hell, I barely passed math in college and even I can figure it out. It OFFENDS ME that retail ads no longer say Merry Christmas. It would NOT offend me if a retail ad had “Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa” or whatever other holidays they felt needed to be included. Most chrisitans aren’t dumb, they know there’s other holidays out there.

I am not specifically a christian belief follower… I don’t go to church, etc… so don’t lump me in with those Christian extremeists.. But I am a traditionalist. I like tradition. I was raised celebrating Christmas… not the Happy Holidays. Therefore, I believe that retailers should not turn a blind eye to the whole reason they do so well this time of the year and they should proudly display the words “MERRY CHRISTMAS” on every piece of literature and in every store.

In fact, if they don’t… I’m not buying from them this year. If you even remotely feel any tradition behind your Christmas, you should do the same.

Edited: Let me clarify, I’m not supporting Christianity’s role in Christmas. I am supporting traditionalism. This is CHRISTMAS SEASON, not HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON. I grew up celebrating Christmas, not Happy Holiday, not Kwanzaa, or Festivus, or whatever. Retailers should respect this season for what it is and say “MERRY CHRISTMAS”. I firmly believe that retailers are responsible for ruining Christmas for the masses. When Christmas (not Kwanzaa trees) trees go up before Halloween, and Christmas (not Festivus) lights decorate the aisles long before Thanksgiving, people get sick of the season… then they further go and ruin it by not even calling it what it is: CHRISTMAS SEASON.
