Reponse to yesterdays post

After I read Amy’s comment on yesterdays post, I started posting my own comment. It got longer and longer, so I decided to make it today’s blog post….

I disagree, there is nothing hateful in that message. While I am not particularly religious, I can understand where he is coming from. Keep in mind, this politician is an Australian, not American. America was indeed founded on a freedom of religion. I believe you are free to practice whatever religion (even non-religion) you like. However you do not have to right to force your beliefs on me. Forcing your beliefs on me include doing your religious thing in front of me just to make me uncomfortable. Keep it to yourself.

What I really agree more with are the first three sentences. Immigrants should learn to adapt to the country they are moving to. I shouldn’t have to learn Spanish to communicate with people who are living in MY country… the country in which *I* was born. I shouldn’t have to worry that what I say and do in my own country might offend someone else. In my eyes, I keep my stuff to myself, you should keep your stuff to yourself.

One thing that grips me is that I don’t need more “African-American” awareness… if theyre so African, go live there. I tell you what, they’ll probably like America better. When you start calling yourself an “American”, like I do, I’ll start treating you like an “American”. In my opinion, skin color doesn’t mean anything… I’m not asking you to believe what I believe… I’m asking you to keep your beliefs to yourself, as I do… practice your stuff at home. I don’t need to be “African-American” aware, or “Asian-American” aware…. If you want to start segmenting the population then I’m a “German-Irish American” and you should respect my traditions, whatever they are.

Fuck that, I’m an American… and if you’re here legally, so are you. We don’t need to add whatever continent your great-great-great-grandparents came from. You’re an AMERICAN. ACT LIKE ONE.

I think the final paragraph wraps up everything I like about this entire statement: “If you aren’t happy here then LEAVE. We didn’t force you to come here. You asked to be here. So accept the country YOU accepted.”
