I’ve realized that the stores around here have had their “Back To School” sales and commercials on for the past couple of weeks. After all, Wal-Mart already has Thanksgiving stuff up in the store. However, until yesterday I didn’t realize that SCHOOL HAS ALREADY STARTED??!?!
I drove past an elementary school yesterday that had “School Starts August 12″ on it’s marquee out front. I was a little shocked. My question is why??
When I went to school, we started more like September 12th (usually the first week after Labor Day). I can’t imagine starting earlier than that. It doesn’t make any sense. August is the hottest month of the year. Can you imagine what it must cost to air condition these old buildings that are *not* energy efficient? From what I remember, my schools didn’t have the best air conditioning systems in the first place.
Schools complain about not having enough money, and yet they seem to have enough to run the A/C during the hottest month of the year. In my opinion, it would make more sense to bring the kids back to school in September, when it at least starts to cool off a little bit.
August has also been, traditionally, the “vacation month”. I know more than one family who is rushing a vacation this month just to get the kids back home in time (it seems some states start a little later than others).
With the automatic school vacation day of Labor Day, when you start the kids so soon, you get nothing accomplished before the holiday away. Kids aren’t paying attention, it’s too hot and you have a holiday coming up.
It seems to me that schools are just asking for trouble. It makes no sense to start school before the day after Labor Day. It’s just asinine.
