Burn Baby Burn!

On Wednesday, some relatives of mine that I hadn’t seen in awhile were coming through the state. We decided to meet up for the day. So I took the day off and headed up the Interstate to meet up with them.

Along the way, traffic came to a complete stand-still. Both lanes of the highway, completely stopped… Nobody had a clue as to what was going on. Some of us were lucky, and we could pull off into a nearby rest area. After about 30 minutes, I joined the line of cars that were parked on the rest area ramp to get back onto the Interstate. Suddenly, traffic started moving again. It wasn’t “Stop and Go” like Atlanta’s rush hour, but just “Go!”

I noticed that traffic wasn’t coming from the other direction. About five miles up the road, I could see why. There were two fire trucks and a few patrol cars parked right on the Interstate with a plume of smoke coming up from behind them.

This is the burning truckAs I got closer, I could see that the plume of smoke was coming from a truck trailer. As you can see from the picture, it was a Dollar General truck. You could tell the firefighters were just letting this one burn out… the trailer was actually still burning as I passed it. (Sorry, couldn’t see that in the picture).

As it turns out, they completely closed the Interstate in that direction for several hours as they cleaned this mess up. They routed traffic around the long way, which I’m sure sucked for people going in that direction.

Now, two things came to mind as I approached this…. one, where’s the rig? It looks like there is a Tow Rig there, but I didn’t see a truck. Two… what the hell is in a Dollar General trailer that could possibly catch fire?
