Here’s something else I think is sick…

See this cute guy here? This is Norman. He was an eight year old sweet, loving cat who had the misfortune of belonging to a woman who had bad taste in men. This sweet guy loved his owner so much he would come running to the door to greet her when she came home from work.

Norman’s owner, Lisa Altobelli, has testified she had dated Joseph Petcka shortly before he killed her cat. One night he began drinking heavily right after they had a fight. She said she went to bed to avoid him but he woke her around 3 a.m. by putting his knee in her ribs and complaining that Norman had attacked him. When he refused to calm down, she left the apartment, not having any idea that Norman was in trouble.

Assistant District Attorney Leila Kermani said the cat named Norman died with broken teeth, broken ribs, a broken leg, a torn tongue, massive internal injuries including bruised lungs and a bruised liver and a chest cavity filled with blood.

“The defendant, in a fit of anger and rage, beat a defenseless animal to death,” Kermani told the jury in her opening remarks Wednesday. “The defendant killed Norman simply because he was an angry, jealous and drunken bully.”

Former New York Mets minor leaguer Joseph Petcka, 37, is on trial on charges of aggravated cruelty to animals for killing Norman on March 27, 2007, after a night of heavy drinking. He faces up to two years in prison if convicted. Petcka, a pitcher briefly in the Mets’ minor league system in 1992, later appeared in a Brawny paper towels commercial and had small roles in “Sex and the City” and other television shows.

This is just sick. I am horrified that Petcka can only get two years. He committed a cruel and vicious crime against a poor defenseless animal. I hope he not only gets convicted, but I hope he serves the maximum penalty. His attorney is saying that it was an accident. You don’t KICK any animal by accident. You don’t “swat” an animal “real hard” before or after kicking it by accident. This was intentional. This jackass Petcka was mad at his girlfriend and he took it out on a poor loving animal.

Petcka’s lawyer is also crying foul that the ADA hasn’t offered a plea bargain. WHY SHOULD the DA’s office offer a plea? This guy MURDERED an animal. If Norman was human instead of a cat, Petcka would be looking at MURDER IN THE FIRST DEGREE.

If it was up to me, I’d like his punishment to be in a boxing ring with me for 10 minutes. He gets nothing, not even boxing gloves. I get my Glock and a baseball bat.

Something constructive I can do though, I am writing a letter to the DA’s office of New York. I am urging the ADA to continue to seek the maximum penalty for this guy. If this at all outrages you, I encourage you to do the same. Here’s the address for your convenience. Make sure you’re nice in your letter. The DA’s office is on our side, we just want to encourage them to keep forging ahead and accept nothing less than the maximum penalty.
