Scenes from an Auburn Game – LSU 2008
As most of you know by now, I am a huge Auburn fan. I am a season ticket holder and contributor to the Athletics Program. I went to the Auburn v. LSU game on Saturday. While I was disappointed that Auburn didn’t get the win, I was also impressed at how much Auburn had improved over their game at Mississippi State. Longtime readers of my blog will know that my “Scenes from an Auburn Game” posts are my general observations while at the game… so here it goes.
I’ll start with stuff about the game. One of my biggest gripes is that with all the hype about Lee Ziemba. Being a potential hot NFL draft pick in a couple of years, he sure does make a lot of mental mistakes, causing Auburn some penalties. Does anything think this guy can get through a game without causing Auburn some grief? After all, he was responsible for the first score against Auburn all season (MS State’s 2 points).
As much as Auburn’s offense improved in the game against LSU, I still think that the spread offense isn’t really working. Maybe we at least need to modify it to help punch it in during those red zone situations… and what’s the story with Kodi Burns? When, if ever, is he going to play?
Let me start this point by clarifying that I am not saying this because I’m a “sore loser” or a “disgruntled fan”. I was planning on addressing this regardless of who won… but I think LSU fans have no class whatsoever. When Brad Lester (an Auburn running back) was on the field and hurt, their fans started shouting and chanting “Get up! Get up!”, followed by a rousing chant of “LSU! LSU!”, in case we didn’t realize who was being rude enough to demand that our hurt player get up. The crowd was promptly booed by the students and Auburn fans… and rightly so. I thought Auburn fans showed a lot of class later when one of LSU’s players was hurt on the field… not only did we refrain from telling their player to get up, but we actually clapped when he did, as we were glad he was not hurt too seriously.
LSU fans also showed their lack of class by getting into four separate fist fights near our section alone… amazing how the cops always seemed to settle on throwing out the drunk as hell, can barely stand up straight LSU fan instead of Auburn people. I’m just wondering… can an LSU fan watch a football game without getting drunk? Is that possible?
I also loved how some LSU fans dressed up in referee uniforms this year, an obvious reference to the fact that they think Auburn bribes the refs at our home games. Interestingly enough, most of the blown ref calls went in LSU’s favor this year. Glad to hear that your check cleared, LSU. It was nice of them to send you some souvenir uniforms for your loyal fans too.
Okay, enough of the game specific stuff… one of the funniest things I observed during the game involves student interaction. What really amazes me is that when they play Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer”, they cut out the chorus… and the student section of the stadium knows all the words and fills in the blank. These kids were all born after this song as a hit (1986-1987)…. it amazes me that they all seem to know every word!
Stay tuned for next week’s Scenes from an Auburn Game… where I’ll make my observations on the Auburn vs. Tennessee game. WAR EAGLE!
