I just realized that two historical events took place 10 years ago today.

Bill Clinton was impeached for his dishonesty in the Monica Lewinsky controversy.

I graduated from college.

Yes, ten years ago today, I graduated from college. I had my degree in marketing and I was going to change the world. I was headed to work for a software company to do a little Internet marketing.

Some of my Internet accomplishments are we were one of the first companies to put advertisements in software. I am personally one of the grandfathers of those ads that pop up on websites and look like Windows dialog boxes. Not the ones that move and shake. Mine looked just like a Windows box. Me and my creative team created “Zippy the Zipper”, a cartoon character that was in a lot of our advertisements.

Then the dotcom bubble burst. I floated through jobs like retail, car salesman (ick!), etc.

Now I’m working for a company in the IT department. How did that happen? Why didn’t I listen to my friends and family and take IT classes in college… it would have been so much more helpful.

You know, I miss the marketing side of things, but I actually like my current job most of the time (except when it seems like everything goes wrong). There’s no way I’d trade this for my last job.

Would I go back into marketing if offered a job? I don’t know. A year ago, I would have said “in a heartbeat”. But I’ve been working here now for ten months. It’s a good company and I like what I do.

I often wish I had listened to my friends and family and gone into IT/MIS classes. But would I go back to school again? Heck no. I’m done with that!

Would I have had a different career path if I had taken those IT/IS classes? Most definitely. But then again, I never would have had the fun of marketing those first few years out of school.
